I was contacted by the lovely folks over at <a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/">Popina </a>to do a swimsuit review. A couple years ago, I won a suit from Popina, and did a <a href="http://dolledupdesirae.blogspot.com/2013/05/i-was-popina-swimwear-winner.html">blog post</a>. Once again it was hard to chose a suit with so many cute ones available. But, I settled on the <a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/jantzen-vamp-maillot-one-piece-swimsuit-red-popina-swimwear-c-61-p-1-pr-273.html">Jantzen Vamp Maillot suit in red</a>. I was told that these suits run a little small. So, I went with a size ten. I had no trouble getting the suit on. Once on, it was quite comfortable. I could move freely without anything riding or feeling awkward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This particular suit comes with a detachable halter strap. I chose to wear the strap since I am small busted (no nip slips needed here!). It also has a tie in the back, which is more than just a decorative piece. It allows the top to be adjusted to give more room or to give a better fit. The bust is lined enough to give coverage without looking like a cone bust. Also, the modesty skirt give that extra bit to help hide those insecure areas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This, like their other suits, are quality suits. I feel like I will have this suit for years to come without the slightest bit of wear. They have that vintage feel without needing to be extra careful, though the suit will still need proper care. I highly recommend Jantzen suits and Popina.</div>

Every Friday, I become painfully aware of my lack of novelty brooches as I scroll through the many Instagram photos. I hope to be able to participate in #noveltybroochfriday more this coming year. Here are a few brooches on my wish list.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SOfO3XdOUig/VJoA0XV240I/AAAAAAAADP0/BTGyUaIOEvI/s1600/il_fullxfull.620353384_kydy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SOfO3XdOUig/VJoA0XV240I/AAAAAAAADP0/BTGyUaIOEvI/s1600/il_fullxfull.620353384_kydy.jpg" height="393" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This horse head brooch from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/DemureCoutureDesigns?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Demure Couture </a>, would go nicely with my <a href="http://www.atomicswag.com/range-rider-ladies-t-shirt/">Atomic Swag Range Rider </a>tee.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I actually do have a painter's palate brooch that needs to be restored. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I like to bowl. I'm not very good at it, but I find it fun. So, this bowling themed bakelite brooch is right up my alley! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since I live in a city without a car, my primary form of transportation are my feet. I don't tend to walk much more than a mile one way, but even that amount of walking can put wear and tear on shoes. I am constantly looking for vintage style shoes that would be great for walking. I keep thinking that once I find these miracle shoes, I'll start wearing dresses to work. But, most likely I'll stick to slacks. I can still dream, though. Here is my wish list for work appropriate attire.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I really do love loafers. And, these two tone loafers from<a href="http://www.rocketoriginals.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=MITZI"> Rocket Originals</a> are beyond adorable.</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I have several pairs of<a href="http://remixvintageshoes.myshopify.com/collections/womens/products/greta"> Re-Mix Vintage Shoes</a>, but never seem to have enough. These would look fabulous with a pair of slacks as well as a dress. They could even be worn with shorts on the weekend. </td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I love fragrances. Sadly, I don't get to really wear them anymore since I have an asthmatic cat. I am by no means an expert in vintage clothing. But, I have been collecting for just shy of 20 years. Lately, I have seen quite a few listing and questions from people who are either just starting to get into vintage, starting to sell, or purging a relatives items. Most often these items get listed as the wrong decade, because the person is going just by shape or guessing on a label. I've tried to point some of these in the right direction, but doing it one at a time can be quite difficult. So, even though there are many blog posts out there on how to date vintage clothing, I'm going to do one too. I am going to focus on the 1950s, because that's what I know the best. Here are the easiest ways I know to find out if a garment is from the 50s or later. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Zipper Type</b> </span>- One of the first things I learned, and still the first thing I look for, is the zipper. 9 times out of 10 if the dress or skirt has a metal zipper, it is from the early 60s or older. Though as most of us know, zippers are fairly easy to replace. Metal zippers do tend to last longer, but that doesn't mean they don't have to be replaced after 60 years. Also, living among a large Chinese population, I have seen garments from Hong Kong that used metal zippers into the 70s. So, there are some exceptions. But, most of the time this is a good indicator of age. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_WvpOFaJcDw/VJOaqj-gAkI/AAAAAAAADOI/8DY-M7SdLRU/s1600/100_2547.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_WvpOFaJcDw/VJOaqj-gAkI/AAAAAAAADOI/8DY-M7SdLRU/s1600/100_2547.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Zipper Placement</span></b> - Another good indication of the age of the garment is the placement of the zipper. Most pre early 60s dresses had left side seam zippers. It wasn't until the 60s that back zippers became a common practice. Occasionally there will be an older dress with a back zipper, which I have seen most often in cocktail and formal dresses. But, if the zipper is on the left side of a dress, than most likely it is pre 60s.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Union Label</b> </span>- This is the item that I point out to a lot of people. Not all garments had a Union label, but when they do, it is easy to narrow down the time frame. There is a great resource out there, with pictures, that I often refer to (<a href="http://vintagefashionguild.org/label-resource/ilgwu/">click here</a>). I have been wrong thinking an item was late 50s only to find a Union label that said otherwise. Now, of course, if an item is hand made, it isn't going to have a Union label. Having a Union label is always a bonus. </div>

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zgGxPbwe4XM/VJOa6qUDq7I/AAAAAAAADOQ/JekfYj4xP7w/s1600/100_2554.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zgGxPbwe4XM/VJOa6qUDq7I/AAAAAAAADOQ/JekfYj4xP7w/s1600/100_2554.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This label indicates that this garment is from 1963 - 1974.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Fiber Content</span><span style="color: #a64d79;"> </span></b>- Though polyester was invented in 1941, a version of it was not used in fabrics until the early 50s under the name Dacron which was mostly used in knitwear. The infamous polyester as we know it was used in clothing much more in the mid 60s and later. Also, in 1960 fiber content labels were required in garments. So, if one exists, it is most likely not older than 1960. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="color: #38761d;">Sizing </span></b>- Vintage sizes were different than modern vanity sizing. A size 2 did not exist in the 1950s. Matter of fact, Marilyn Monroe was said to be a size 12, which is by far different than modern size 12s. Like today, women's sizes were even numbers, the most common sizes being from 12 to 20. If a garment has a number smaller than 10 (9 in juniors), most likely that item is not from the 1950s. A 1950s size 12 measures approximately 34 inch bust, 25 inch waist, 36 inch hips. If a garment says it is a size 12, but is much larger than these measurements, then it isn't from the 1950s.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This label comes from a dress that has a metal side zipper, but the fiber content on the label makes this dress most likely from the early 60s. </td></tr>

Typically these five items will get you in the ballpark on dating an item. If none of these items apply, feel free to reach out to any of the vintage bloggers out there. They will be more than happy to share their knowledge with you. After all, if we weren't passionate about it, we wouldn't blog about it.</div>

Even though it is a very emotional time, being able to provide assistance during these times of need is something I enjoy. Not only am I able to share my talents, but I also have a little part in preserving history. Plus, it is fun to look through old things and seeing each family's history.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As before, I was able to find some things that I can share with you. One of those things were clippings from a magazine article on how to make yourself over in just three days. I hope you enjoy these instructions as much as I did. Soon I hope to be able to share more information on how to be the perfect vintage glamorous you.</div>

I have many things in my closet that I have outgrown (gained too much weight), or no longer need. Since I am a bit short on funds for some bills, I decided that I should have one epic sale. I've listed about half of the items so far. All listings are starting off at 99 cents, including some never worn Freddies jeans I'll be listing in a few days. Check out some of the items below. To bid on them, go <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/vintage.kitten/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3692">here</a>.</div>

I hate jean shopping. I don't think they make jeans to fit any shape. My problem is I am much larger in the bottom than I am in my waist. So, I end up getting the dreaded gap back. Or, if I get them to fit my hips/butt, they fall down in the waist. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also don't have time to dress up every day. I love my Freddies, but I don't feel comfortable dressing in them when I haven't set my hair (though, I've seen other girls do this and they look fab, I don't think I could pull it off as well). I wanted to find a pair of jeans that I could look vintage inspired without having to plan my whole day setting my hair and what not. Also, over the last six months or so, I've gotten very lazy. My uniform on the weekends have been the same stripped shirt and jeans. I wanted to change that, but couldn't find a pair of jeans that went higher than my mid hip. Nor, could I find something that wouldn't break the bank.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recently, my go to jeans fell apart. I was dreading plunking down a bunch of cash for a pair of jeans I didn't totally love. I decided to give Levi's a chance. I hadn't tried them in over a decade. And, at that time, they didn't make jeans for girls with hips. I knew that they came out with the Curve ID recently. So, I decided to give them a shot. Of course, the Curve ID guide wasn't working, which was probably the best thing that could have happened. I decided to go for a pair of dark wash (I love dark wash, and can rarely find them dark enough to suit my tastes) high rise which were on sale for $40 (my price range). I figured at that price, if they didn't work out, not a lot of money was lost.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But, when they arrived, I knew I was going to love them. I did have to go up two sizes, but they are the most comfortable pair of jeans I have ever worn. They have quite a bit of stretch without looking thin and cheap. They hit me at my belly button; high enough to be able to wear some of my vintage blouses. And, they don't look like mom jeans. I loved them so much, I went back and bought three more pairs. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ones I bought were the <a href="http://us.levi.com/product/index.jsp?productId=16941236&jsessionid=VLv0TJWL9ry0HnGl8Yy0xSLNfqGFp2CSMsZLqyqtK2hSxJppykT3!-93243198&&cp=3146849.11580757.11580760&fbn=16941236|null|null">512 Perfectly Slimming Bootcut</a>. I do prefer a straight leg, but the boot cut had the color I wanted. I bought two pairs of the indigo rinse, one pair in black, and one pair of straight legs. The straight legged jeans sit about a half an inch lower - or right at the top of the hip. But, they are still just as comfortable. The beauty about these is right now there is 20% off the sale price by using code FEBPI14 good through March 31, 2014.</div>

And, I wasn't thoroughly convinced that I wanted to see Saving Mr. Banks in theater either. I didn't have high hopes it would be a good film. I only vaguely knew what it was about, and had no idea how Mr. Banks tied in with the story. To be honest, I have only seen Mary Poppins a few times, and after watching Saving Mr. Banks, have realized there are parts of it I don't remember.<br />
<br />
I am a sucker for any movie - good or bad - that is set in decades past. So, I decided that I should go see this film. I am so glad that I did. It was a great film. Way better than I expected. It didn't just talk about the difficulties Walt Disney had with the author of Mary Poppins, but it explained why she was so difficult to work with. It taught that we shouldn't let our past experiences allow us to be bitter and hard-hearted. I even got a little teary eyed at times.<br />
<br />
What I also liked about the film was Emma Thompson's costumes. Even though she was playing a character who was supposed to be stuffy and uptight, I really enjoyed most of what she wore.<br />
<br />
If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it. If you have seen it, please leave me a comment telling me what you liked, or disliked.<br />

Even though that exposure has been small, we are very proud nonetheless. First, They Bleed at Midnight was one of 18 films accepted in to the first annual Film Noir Festival in Gisors, France. Though we didn't win the competition, we were privileged that our film was selected along with those with a bigger budget and more experience making films.<br />
<br />
Our director, Karen Ruiz, was also interviewed by a local cable network television station. To see a snippet of our film, and the interview with Karen, please find it on YouTube <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHZJ6jSBK48#t=225">here</a>.<br />

Another item I found in the box of patterns, was this sheet of paper titled Homey Ideas for Better Living. It was almost to the point that it was unsalvageable, but I managed to carefully unfold it and scan it to share. Click on the picture to make it bigger (best to right click and open in new tab).</div>

Among the massive amount of things I went through at the estate, was a box of patterns. There were several crochet patterns, sewing patterns for dolls, sewing patterns for kids, but only a two soiled slips of papers that were knitting patterns. I assume that she got these free somewhere along the way. The daughter told me that her mother didn't sew, knit, or crochet. She just collected things. I'm glad she did though. Now, I have something to share with you.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first pattern is a chunky cardigan in sizes 12 - 18. It features oversized buttons, and a striped pattern. You can click on the picture to get a larger version.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The second pattern is a fringed mock turtleneck sweater and matching hat. It is for sizes 10 - 16. </div>

I would love to see the finished product if anyone decides to knit these sweaters. Feel free to drop me a line with photos.</div>

The mother of a friend of mine recently passed away at the age of 93. Since the early 50s, she had been buying things, and not using them. My friend reached out to me, because she needs all the help she can get to get through the mounds of things her mother collected. On top of buying things and never using them, her mother was also well off. So, many of these things are higher end from stores like Saks, B. Altman, Gimbals, etc. </div>
<div>
Needless to say, I was excited about taking a look at what her mother had. Of course, the only time either of us had to go to the estate was the night before Thanksgiving. The plan was that my friend would go up on Monday, and I would follow behind, using her car, on Wednesday after work. I spent four hours in the car! But, once I got there, it was all worth it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Even though I was exhausted, I dug right into the piles of things. I spent most of my evening, in what my friend ended up dubbing the vintage room, because that's where most of the goodies were. I had to stop myself at midnight so that I could get a decent amount of sleep. Of course, I didn't. I couldn't sleep. I kept thinking about all the things left to discover. It took me at least a couple of hours to fall asleep. Then, I was up by 5am. I very quickly started digging, and kept at it until 5pm that day. Her and I put aside so much stuff, we couldn't get it all in the car.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was proud of myself that I had enough self control not to keep every amazing thing I saw. That's where this benefits you. I will be listing the things on EBay, starting with a bunch of handbags I started on yesterday. I can't do it all at once, but will try to list new things in a steady stream. Now, keep in mind, the prices are higher due to the lack of use of the products and the quality, but that doesn't mean I won't accept a lower price. Feel free to make offers. I will take into consideration any offers given.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can find my EBay page <a href="http://www.ebay.com/sch/vintage.kitten/m.html?item=400617042690&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562">here</a>. Keep checking back since I will be listing things as I have time. Also, I have posted some of the photos of the bags that are currently for sale on EBay. To see more, check out my Instagram page, with the link on the left hand side of this page.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Enjoy!</div>

I was originally going to do three different posts, and ramble in each. But, I decided that I don't feel much like rambling when pictures sometimes speak for themselves. The pictures below show the outfits I wore this weekend, along with my beautiful friends. </div>

I would have thought that by the time I went through my teenage years, that I would no longer have to deal with acne. But, as I approach my mid-thirties, it's a fight I still struggle with. To make matters worse, with the aging skin and the climate in San Francisco, my skin can get dry if I use the wrong prodcuts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It took me a while to figure out a good routine. If I cleansed my skin with the same soap I used in the morning, my nose would peel and my acne wouldn't be any better. This was discouraging. I tried many different products, but the result was always the same. Then I got to thinking, what would my grandmother have used? I had always seen Ponds Cold Cream, but never got around to trying it. Then one day, I saw a vintage blogger's post raving about Boots Cold Cream and toner. I thought I'd give it a try.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R9hIamd9XGg/UfFEFZXzcOI/AAAAAAAADBs/MDwzN8mwXXA/s1600/IMG_5773+cold+cream+box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img bba="true" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R9hIamd9XGg/UfFEFZXzcOI/AAAAAAAADBs/MDwzN8mwXXA/s1600/IMG_5773+cold+cream+box.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The line I chose has rose oil in it. I love the smell. It feels a bit greasy, as most cold creams do. So, at first I was a little aprehensive that it would make me break out more. But, after a week of using the product every night, followed by the toner, I saw a big difference in my skin. My nose stopped peeling. My acne started to clear up. I've been using this product for a couple years now. I notice a difference when I go a day or two without using it. I have tried another cold cream, but with my sensitive eyes, it actually makes them sting. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since I have to order this product online, I haven't replenished my stock (I bought several jars at once). Sadly, the toner has been gone for a long time. But, in it's place I have been using witchhazel (not as pleasing of a smell), that works just as well, if not better. As an added bonus, witchhazel also is great for other skin irritations, such as razor burn. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With my sensitive eyes, I am limited to the brands I can use. I have found only certain products do not bother me. If I use the wrong product, I end up running up and down the hall screaming with my eyes clamped shut. Not a pretty sight.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With that being said, my skin care routine consists of:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. <a href="http://www.neutrogena.com/product/oil-free+eye+makeup+remover.do?sortby=ourPicks">Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Make-up Remover</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. Boots Cold Cream Rose</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
3. <a href="http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/dickinson%27s-original-witch-hazel-pore-perfecting-toner/ID=prod4475-product">Dickson's Witch Hazel Toner </a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
4. <a href="http://www.olay.com/skin-care-products/classics/hydrating-facial-moisturizer?pid=075609007446">Oil of Olay Moisturizer</a> (Now that I use cold cream, the type of moisturizer I use doesn't really matter. I choose this one because of the smell, and it's what I remember my grandmother using.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And in the morning, I use <a href="http://www.cetaphil.com/products/gentle-cleansing-bar">Cetaphil Gentle Bar Soap.</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The one thing lacking in my routine, though, is a good eye cream. I have yet to find one that works well with my sensitive eyes, and where I see a difference in the appearance of my eyes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What are some of your favorite skin care products?</div>

I haven't been doing much of anything lately. With wanting to spend time with my kitten, and shortage of funds, I've just been spending a lot of time at home. It's actually been quite nice. I've been less stressed out, and getting way more sleep. But, it also makes for a boring blog. Since I don't go anywhere, I've been concentrating mostly on my hair. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This time I wanted to see if I could create a pin curl setting with curlers. I chose the setting that I used in the last post laying out my curls just like the diagram pictured. The only exception was that I had to use three rows of curls in the back instead of two otherwise my hair would never dry. The problem I ran across was that I didn't have the correct size rollers. I needed slightly bigger ones than I used for the front, and slightly smaller ones than I used for the back. I ended up having to go over parts of the back with a curling iron.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also realized that a curler set doesn't relax as much as a pin curl set. Having such springy curls can be a good thing, or it can be a hindrance. In this case, since I wanted the hair to be less springy, and just curl under, it was a hindrance. Even though it didn't turn out very close to the picture, I still liked the difference in curl from the front to back. </div>

This day I was invited over a friends house for dinner. I do like these types of invites, because I can still dress up, but it doesn't cost me as much as going to dinner at a restaurant. It is also easier to have conversation with my friends. The weather is weird in San Francisco normally, but this year it is even weirder. We had a long heat spell a couple weeks back. Now, it's fairly cool, which is what I'm used to. I pulled out these pants that I have never worn before, mostly because I wasn't brave enough to pull off this bright pattern. But, without anything else to wear, I sucked it up and wore them out. I got a few looks, but not as much as I thought I'd get (though I felt like I should be golfing). They are quite comfortable too. I was a bit cold, though. So, they may not come out again until the weather gets better.</div>

I have been trying almost every day to do pin curls so that I can improve. I'm having a hard time getting my hair smooth. Most often I have a sort of dent in my hair before the curls start. And, sometimes the curls aren't really round, but kind of square. But, I keep trying.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This next set I tried was picked out by Tony Curtis (with a little help from Janet Leigh). It is the headliner (pun) for the section "...hairstyles for the young married." Now, I probably wouldn't be considered young by 1957 standards, and I am not married, but I thought I'd try it anyway. The hair in the photo is a bit shorter than mine, and the bangs are a bit longer. So, my hair turned out slightly different (actually my hair turned out very similar to all the other settings I've done without instructions). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't usually set my bangs, but thought I'd play along with the instructions. It called for "a row of barrel curls for the bangs." Since my bangs are too short to curl in a barrel row - or stand up curl - I decided to use 5/8" perm rods. Though one fell out, and I had to fight some hair that was sticking straight up, I actually rather liked the outcome.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rest of the instructions were a little vague, especially for a newbie. It states to set the hair in "a halo of pin curls, loosely set, for the sides and back..." Well, I don't know how to loosely set my hair with out it falling out. So, I set it normally, which is probably much tighter than they meant. The diagram shows a column of three pin curls on top of the ear, and four in the next column. The back has two rows of pin curls, which I didn't do the exact amount (the diagram shows five). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was actually surprised that I got somewhat close to the picture of the final product. I think that once I figure out how to smooth out my hair toward the crown, that my settings will look a lot better.</div>

Growing out of my clothes has been quite upsetting. I used to have no problem finding vintage clothes that would fit, but as I've gotten older, things have shifted and spread. It also used to be very easy to drop a few pounds. Now, though, it takes me a week to drop even one pound, and only a couple days to put it back on. I know I need to make permanent changes. I find this difficult for a couple reasons. One, by the time I get home, I'm pretty tired, and really don't like cooking, or cleaning up afterward. Two, I have one major food sensitivity, which makes it hard to add a variety of tastes onto my plate. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started thinking about how people ate 60 years ago. I'm sure the portions were a lot smaller than they are now. Matter of fact, one thing I learned trying to count my calories over the last few weeks is how small a serving size is. We tend to eat two or three servings sizes per item. Looking back through my old magazines, I found several articles on how to loose weight. Many reduce a day's calorie intake to 1200 for women. This is actually what My Fitness Pal told me I should be taking in if I want to loose a pound a week. Now, I assume that since I walk about three miles a day, that I could have a bit of wiggle room - but not much.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also noticed that there weren't any snacks in these plans. Some of the meals were pretty large, though. So, maybe that keeps one full longer. I thought I'd give it a try. I took pieces from three different meal plans, changing things that I either couldn't eat (gluten), or don't like (liver, lamb, etc.). I created an eight day meal plan all just under 1200 calories - that way I have a bit of room if something comes up. I am curious to see how I fair under this plan.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eoHGy-c4cDI/UdNMUjeS6XI/AAAAAAAAC_M/L9qgoegszac/s1508/pretty+figure.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eoHGy-c4cDI/UdNMUjeS6XI/AAAAAAAAC_M/L9qgoegszac/s640/pretty+figure.jpg" width="492" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Another thing I have often chuckled at, is the exercise that these magazines promote. Often, they are silly things like massaging facial muscles, or doing crazy stretches, not actual exercises. I wondered if people didn't need to exercise, or they just didn't know how to. Compared to today's intense workouts, these older work outs seem tame. But, again, as I was looking through these magazines, some of the exercises they promote don't seem that different than the ones today. I thought it can't hurt to try, right? So, starting Monday (gives me time to go grocery shopping), I am going to follow a vintage style meal plan, and do these exercises every night. I am hoping to see some improvement in the fit of my clothes. If all goes well, and I can stick to this plan, I will let you all know how it went.</div>

After the last few frizzy disasters attempting pin curls, I did some research to figure out what I was doing wrong. I understood the concept, but the execution was the hard part. My hair stylist gave me his practice head when I first decided I was going to give this a shot. I suppose that I would have been more successful had I tried it more than once on the head. But, after doing a good job on the practice head, I was even more frustrated that I couldn't do them on my own head. So, I gave up completely, opting for curlers instead.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Occasionally, I'd try one curl, get frustrated, and again set my hair with what I knew how to do. One time I even set the front of my hair in pin curls, finishing the back with curlers after getting fed up. A few weeks ago, I decided that I needed to learn this. I was tired of the sleepless night, sore scalp, and stiff necks of sleeping in rollers. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since I couldn't roll my hair without some help, I found a small piece of plastic piping. I wound my hair up, then slipped it out when I got to my scalp, and pinned it to my head. <a href="http://dolledupdesirae.blogspot.com/2013/06/june-is-for-weddings.html">That attempt</a> left me with a much larger curl than I had planned. It was also pretty frizzy. Fortunately, the wind finished off the rest for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the last post I chronicled my next attempt. This time I used a smaller tube, and tried to follow a pattern. Again, my hair turned out pretty frizzy. My attempts in brushing out the frizz did little. It was hard to find an exact reason for my problem. A search led to taming already frizzy hair with pincurls, how to do pin curls, but nothing on what causes the frizz after the pincurl.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After searching for a while, I finally found the answer. The end of the hair MUST be in the center of the curl, not floating on the outside. I realized that by rolling my hair in a tube and then slipping it off, it was causing my ends to be on the outside of the curl. With this knowledge I decided to forgo the tube, and try freehand which had caused me so many problems before.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You know what? It worked. I rolled my hair in less time than it took me with the tubes. I half followed a pattern, though my ending result didn't look like anything in the pictures. I did a cluster of forward pincurls around my ear, and a double row of three pincurls in the back. I knew as soon as I took the curls out that I did a better job than before. When I brushed them out, I was so happy, that I did a verbal, YES! I'm sure my neighbors thought I was quite strange. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am still happy with the results of my hair. It did take a little more brushing out than it takes when I set with curlers, but that's ok. I know how to do it now. My sides never completely match as I have more hair on one side of my head than the other. But, now that I can set my hair this way, I can work on learning how placement and direction effects the style. </div>

As mentioned previously, I bought a fabulous magazines with pages and pages of setting instructions. Many looked pretty easy. Since this would mark the third time I'd be trying pin curls on my own head, and don't really have the knack of them yet, I thought these patterns would be a good way for me to get some practice. The first pattern I picked out was one with fringe, since that would obviously work with what I have. It looked about the right length with my newly cut hair as well. I laid out the magazine, bobby pins, rat tail comb, and my end papers (which I need to keep my ends in place), and stared in the mirror trying to figure out where to start.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Typically, I rush through setting my hair, since I can practically put curlers in while half asleep. But, with lack of experience, and wanting to really do a good job, I took my time setting my hair. The setting calls for forward pin curls in a single layer along the ear, and a double layer in the back. I did my best to follow the picture, but knew I wasn't placing them quite right. It wasn't until I brushed out my hair that I realized how off I was. The right side of my head had curls starting above my ear, while the left side of my head had curls starting mid ear. But, I did my best to brush my hair out like the girl in the picture.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
When I set my hair a couple weeks ago with pin curls, my hair became very frizzy. I thought this was because my ends were so damaged, though this doesn't happen when I use rollers. So, I went off right away to cut as much of the damaged ends as I could (about two inches). Yet, my hair still came out frizzy with this setting. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. But, I am hoping that practice will make perfect in this situation (unlike my cat eye liner).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The frustration didn't stop with my hair. I planned on wearing this dress with a sun hat that I have not yet worn. The day before was quite warm and very sunny. I thought that it was perfect weather for a nice straw hat. But, this day was overcast and rainy! I tried to make it better by posing in front of a sunny mural. Unfortunately, I didn't get to take a picture with my pretty green hat.</div>

This is the third and final installment on how to be glamorous with limited time. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">You'll have time to add a switch of hair or experiment with your accessories. But, if you do decide to wear a chignon, or sport a tiny tiara, don't overload the glamour so that you'll be weighed down by it. A simple hair-do allows you to indulge in striking and even huge accessories. But, put a heavy switch together with fussy bangs, cascade rhinestone earrings and a heavy rhinestone necklace, and what do you have? A walking jewelry shop.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">There's a large selection of hair ornaments that are not only glamorous but practical, too. If your hair has a tendency to wisp so that even a fixative doesn't help, wear a band of pearls around your head. The band may enable you to fix an elegant French twist. Or, if you dress your hair in a pony tail during the day, loop it up into a mock bun for glamour-nights. Cover the bun with a tiny cap of artificial flowers, or encircle it with a band of rhinestones. Straggly ends can be hidden by a sophisticated chignon and the dramatic effect of a Spanish comb. </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o5whTC6e1M8/UcTUZvC8GKI/AAAAAAAAC8g/0tHyq6hBG_0/s1600/comb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o5whTC6e1M8/UcTUZvC8GKI/AAAAAAAAC8g/0tHyq6hBG_0/s320/comb.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">When you try out accessories in front of the mirror, don't' forget that your earrings must balance with the total effect of you. Be sure that they're suitable for the mood, and that they fill the gap between the lobe of the ear and the edge or you hair. Except for classic pearl earrings, irregular earrings usually are the more attractive than symmetrical ones. The irregular lines will look airy and delicate, even though the earrings may actually be quite large. If you want a severe hair style for evening, accessorize and dramatize it with large or unusual earrings. But if you are aiming for a fluffy, feminine style, don't make it fussier with an over-ornate earring. Choose instead a simple style, perhaps of the button type. Choose elaborate earrings to contrast with a simple hair style. Intricate earrings add excitement and allure to a classic page boy, but too much glitter will spoil the effect of a carefully-designed, involved hair style.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHlFCXHAb4g/UcTTTeM7hTI/AAAAAAAAC8A/F6KkIlYxhK4/s1600/page+boy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QHlFCXHAb4g/UcTTTeM7hTI/AAAAAAAAC8A/F6KkIlYxhK4/s320/page+boy.jpg" width="271" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">For that very gala affair you're going to you'll really want to dazzle, and a formal evening out may call for a hair-do that falls just this side of the spectacular. If you want a fabulous hair-do with clusters of curls or heavy twists or braids, add extra tresses - store-bought tresses - without any compunction. Add a coronet or pony tail for a change in mood, but remember that the quick switch should still be you. If you're very young, steer away from a sophisticated up-swept style, and if you've outgrown your bobby sox, don't coyly add a pony tail, or expect startled stares. If you don't want to invest a week's pay in a few switches for a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, you'll probably buy one that is made of Dynel, a man-made fiber that looks very much like real hair. You can, have a Dynel switch custom-blended of colors that are similar to your own. If you want to tone down their gloss, rub a little talcum into it and you'll achieve a more natural look. </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P7rv-EXdYgQ/UcTTaZQc9_I/AAAAAAAAC8I/vpVg6C18zyo/s1600/fake+hair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P7rv-EXdYgQ/UcTTaZQc9_I/AAAAAAAAC8I/vpVg6C18zyo/s640/fake+hair.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">A stick of lacquer will keep your hair in place all evening. Purse-sized, they're easy to carry, use.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PNrKEhkmOyw/UcTUJkd4IwI/AAAAAAAAC8Q/CkVUedhPLWM/s1600/lacquer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PNrKEhkmOyw/UcTUJkd4IwI/AAAAAAAAC8Q/CkVUedhPLWM/s320/lacquer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">You can set and dry your hair within 90 minutes. Dryer stand frees your hands to apply make-up.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is the second installment in the How to Be Glamorous series. Today we are covering 30 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Unless you have a dryer, don't dampen your hair in order to set it. There may not be enough time for it to dry, especially if the weather is humid. But, always give your hair that all important brushing, whether you have five minutes or thirty. If you have extra time, add a head-vibrating massage, which will give you additional gloss and glow.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Next on the schedule is a quick set with a quick drying lotion. They're not recommended for daily use, because they are usually made with a base that is drying to the hair, even when counteracted with lanolin. But this is a time of emergency, and you should keep a bottle or can of your favorite brand on hand for just this moment.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Set and spray your hair in big pin curls. Don't bother doing your whole head. Just pin up the curls that are necessary, probably two around the forehead, a couple behind the ears and a group across the back of your head. Spray on the lotion and continue dressing. Wait until the very last minute to come out your hair. If you comb out after your dress in on, the pin curls will have had enough time to dry. If you have a dryer fixed on a stand, sit by it while you apply your make-up or patch your nail polish so you're not wasting any valuable time.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uu3SUHUKgec/UcTNWl4sIdI/AAAAAAAAC7o/S1BP1ly9-lo/s1600/30+minutes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uu3SUHUKgec/UcTNWl4sIdI/AAAAAAAAC7o/S1BP1ly9-lo/s320/30+minutes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">If it's an evening date, how about adding some glitter? It's quick to fix and if you do it with a delicate touch, the results will have an elusive allure. Glitter comes in several forms: Tiny sequin sparkles will twinkle like stars in your hair-do. A fine powder of gold dust will shine subtly. A few strokes with a gold stick will provide you with an iridescent streak that will last a day or two. You can use the stick for a tantalizing "tipping" on the edge of your bangs, but gently does it! For streaks, cute a hole in a cardboard, then push through the strands to be streaked. The cardboard will protect the rest of your hair and eyes. To fix the sparkles in your hair, spray on a lacquer first. Then sprinkle on the sparkles with a not-lavish hand. Seal with another swoosh of the lacquer. Don't forget that on your hair a pinch of glitter will appear to be four times the amount. Once fixed, leave the golden touch alone. Brushing or combing may remove it altogether. </li>
</ul>

Check back when I cover the last installment, How to be Glamorous in 90 Minutes.</div>

As I have mentioned before, I'm not very good at pin curls. In order to overcome this handicap, I purchased a hair magazine from 1957. It has countless setting patterns and tips for hair care. This evening I plan on cutting my hair shorter, due to my heavily damaged ends, and am hoping that I will be able to follow some of the setting patterns as some of them seem pretty easy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the meantime, I'd like to share some of the fabulous articles found in the magazine. One such item is the cover article titled "How to be Glamorous in 16 Minutes." This is actually a series of articles also covering 30 minutes and 90 minutes. Unless you follow the vintage life, having permed hair and setting your hair regularly, I don't think every tip will work. But, this doesn't mean that there aren't little gems that can be used in modern life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will start off with 16 minutes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">If your hair feels sticky and dirty, you can remove the dirt with a dry towel. A dry rub is not as good as a dry shampoo for taking away the soot, but it will wipe off surface dirt, and give you a feeling of freshness. Take a rough terry towel and place it over your head. Now go to it with your hand, rubbing and massaging just though you were giving yourself a wet shampoo.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Give your hair a good brushing and a quick massage. </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Use the curling iron to fix any straggly ends. Pin each curl and hold it temporarily in place with a clip. Now take a double square of tissue (or end papers) and insert the curl into the folded tissue. Hold onto the curl with your left hand, and take the curling iron into your right hand. Gently heat the curl inside the tissue, holding it there for a few seconds until the heat penetrates. Move the iron slowly up and down the paper. Leave the curl alone for a few minutes until it has cooled off. Then comb through separately. Brush the curls into a set.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">To keep your hair in place while you finish dressing, use a cosmetic cap - the kind used by professional models. It looks like a supermarket sack, but it's made of nylon mesh. Zip it up the front and it will envelop your entire head, keeping your make-up and hair-do in order.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Spray your hair lightly with lacquer, slip the cap over your head. Later you'll emerge looking as though you came from the beauty parlor.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Cover your hair with a glamorous hat. Keep a feather or jeweled cap in the closet for evening, a felt or straw head hugger for less formal occasions.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PUBtReSJLkA/UcTIJA1JNEI/AAAAAAAAC7Q/MZBjKfaYYCc/s1600/vintage+hat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="dolledup desirae" border="0" height="303" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PUBtReSJLkA/UcTIJA1JNEI/AAAAAAAAC7Q/MZBjKfaYYCc/s320/vintage+hat.jpg" title="vintage feather hat" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Shop for hair accessories that can be useful in turning a mare's nest into a marvelous hair-do when you've no time at all. By holding your hair in place the sleekness that's the secret of glamour. Many ornaments come on combs, while others are sticks or clips that keep your hair-do firm.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SmiltZGdmhg/UcTINtP7PlI/AAAAAAAAC7Y/Iv6rKeigjIA/s1600/hair+accesories.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="dolled up desirae" border="0" height="284" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SmiltZGdmhg/UcTINtP7PlI/AAAAAAAAC7Y/Iv6rKeigjIA/s640/hair+accesories.jpg" title="vintage hair accessories " width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Check back later when I will cover How to Look Glamorous in 30 Minutes.</div>

I admit that I have some hillbilly blood. It comes from my maternal grandfather. He was born in Missouri and raised in Kansas. He loved music, especially country music. I hated riding in the car with him as a child since country was always on the radio. But, as I grew older, I discovered some of the singers that my grandfather probably listened to as a young man. It wasn't until a few months ago that I discovered Bob Wills in his stack of cds. I decided to give it a chance. What I heard I liked. So, I uploaded some songs on to my MP3 player, and over the coming weeks, decided that I really really liked it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dv0w3cRPnlU/UcJRCUzLKKI/AAAAAAAAC64/Zmg9NmNXhZs/s1600/willpicbw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dv0w3cRPnlU/UcJRCUzLKKI/AAAAAAAAC64/Zmg9NmNXhZs/s400/willpicbw.jpg" width="307" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those who don't know, Bob Wills is considered the king of western swing. The music mixes the elements of country with the elements of jazz. It is an upbeat music that is great for dancing. Bob Wills formed the Texas Playboys in 1934 and continued until his poor health in the early 60s. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I often find myself listening to his songs more frequently than others. It was to my surprised when I was told that my grandfather had a run-in with Mr. Wills. The story is Bob Wills "stole" the girl that my grandfather was interested in. Apparently, he got over it though, because he still listened to him later in life. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not all music our grandparents and parents listen to is our style, but sometimes there are gems to be found that they knew about long before we did.</div>
